What is Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service?
DSL is an innovative technology that turns your existing phone line into a multi-channel data-delivery system. One channel transmits voice services exclusively, so you can surf the Web while talking on the phone or faxing. The second channel transmits data downstream at high speeds, and a third channel transmits data upstream.
There are modems at each end of the phone line. One is connected to your computer; one is located at our offices. Working together, they provide a dedicated connection that avoids the need to dial up for access like with traditional analog modem Internet access.

How is DSL different from other Internet connections?
Dial-up (Analog) Modems
Traditional dial-up modems (often called analog modems) are designed to work over regular copper-wire telephone lines and usually operate at speeds ranging from 28.8K to 56K. The major difference between dial-up and DSL modems is that a dial-up modem works over voice frequencies. Using analog technology, it is unable to accommodate the much faster digital frequencies. DSL streamlines data transmission by using the higher, non-voice frequencies.
Cable Modems
An alternative Internet connection is possible through your cable television line, which has been upgraded to carry data in two directions. You share your Internet connection with your neighborhood using this method.
DSL Modems
DSL technology provides a dedicated service over an existing local connection to our central offices. With this connection, you don't have to share local access with other users.

How fast is DSL?
AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet is offered in several packages with downstream speeds ranging from up to 768kbps to up to 6.0 Mbps. Through an AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet connection you have the ability to download files and surf the Internet at very high speeds. Exact throughput speeds experienced will vary based on several factors, including the distance between your home and our central office, the condition of your line, traffic on the Internet, and the performance of servers hosting web sites you visit.

What are the minimum PC specifications for an AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet connection?
AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet is made to run efficiently on today's most popular computers. To use AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet, the minimum requirements are:
PC Requirements:
- Minimum of 266 MHz Processor Speed
- Minimum of 64MB of RAM (128MB recommended)
- Minimum of 125MB of free hard drive space·CD-ROM or DVD drive
- Win98/ME/2000/XP/NT 4.0 SP6
Macintosh Requirements:
- Power PC/G3/G4 or iMac
- Minimum 64MB or RAM (128MB recommended)

Is the AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet service compatible with Apple computers?
Generally, yes. If you're a Macintosh user, you will be able to enjoy most benefits of the AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet service including a customized home page, enhanced email services, and advanced web tools. Specifically, the minimum requirements are:
Macintosh Requirements:
- Power PC/G3/G4 or iMac
- Minimum 64MB or RAM (128MB recommended)
- Minimum of 100MB of free hard drive space·CD-ROM or DVD drive
- Mac OS 8.6-OS X (excluding 10.00-10.04)
However, not all features of AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet are available to Macintosh users. For example, the AT&T Browser and AT&T Online Protection suite are not currently available for Apple computers. Apple users won't be able to use LAUNCHcast Plus or the all-new Messenger, or drag and drop files and photos onto their current browser.

Do I need an additional phone line for AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet?
No. With DSL, your existing phone line is "split" to allow voice and data transmission at the same time. No additional line is required.
How does the AT&T Online Protection software suite make it easier to manage online security issues?
AT&T Online Protection brings all of our security tools together in one easy-to-use Dashboard. Simple icons, buttons, and options take the hassle out of staying safe online.
By accessing the Dashboard, you can quickly see the status of all your security tools: Anti-Spy, Anti-Virus, Pop-Up Blocker, Parental Controls, and AT&T Mail Protection. If everything is turned on and running smoothly, you'll see a green checkmark. If specific action is required, you'll see a yellow alert icon and instructions on what action you need to take.
If you see an alert — or if you want to take a closer look or adjust a particular security feature -- simply click on the small arrow beside the tool. From there, more options will drop down for further review and action.

How will the AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet service help protect my inbox from spam?
AT&T Mail will offer powerful protection through SpamGuard Plus, which redirects junk mail into a customer's bulk mail folder. Additionally, AT&T members can further improve the effectiveness of the spam filtering capability by tagging those messages that are considered spam. Over time, the AT&T spam filters learn what you personally consider to be spam and will become that much more effective in keeping junk mail out of your inbox.
In addition, AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet offers AddressGuard™, a premium spam feature that allows you to create hundreds of disposable email addresses. This comes in handy particularly when you need to provide your email address to people and companies you have no history with. Instead of giving out your permanent email address, you can give out a disposable email address. That way, if the disposable email address is abused in anyway, you can simply eliminate it to stop the spam from reaching your inbox.

I already have an email account through Yahoo!. Do I need to use the AT&T email address?
If you are already have a "you@yahoo.com" email account you can continue to access your mail separately if you wish.
However, we highly recommend you give your existing you@yahoo.com account all the benefit of your new AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet service. This can be done at no additional charge by merging your you@yahoo.com account with your new AT&T account during the registration process. Just imagine all the added value you get from getting additional storage, premium spam functionality, premium virus protection, and more.
AT&T Mail users will also be able to receive messages from multiple email accounts (including @sbcglobal.net and @yahoo.com accounts) in a single inbox.

How do I know that prices won't change in the future or that I won't be charged for features that are currently included?
AT&T offers both term plans and month-to-month plans. If you signed up for a 12-month term plan, your price for Internet access is guaranteed for 12 months, period. We are committed to providing a competitive price that meets the needs of our customers.
There are premium services, such as additional email storage and downloadable games that can be purchased and you can sign up for these using your credit card.

Do I have to purchase a modem and pay an activation fee?
There is a charge of $49.99 for the DSL modem with $49.99 mail in rebate. Or if you prefer a Wireless Gateway this will cost $79.99 with $49.99 mail in rebate. There is no activation fee.
